Dear Member of NSW Legislative Council,
 
As a frontline community worker in New South Wales I urge you to support the Government’s Bill to introduce a portable long service leave scheme for workers in the community and disability sectors.
 
Portable long service leave will recognise the service of community workers to the people and communities of NSW. It will assist with recruiting and retaining workers in these essential sectors, and give us a well deserved break.
 
Without a portable scheme, we are not getting to access long service leave because of the nature of our sector funding means we often have to change employers.
 
The ACT, Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory have already established portable long service leave schemes for community workers. NSW should not fall behind. We deserve the same support.
 
The Bill proposes the scheme commence July 2025, so that our sector has time to prepare for its introduction. This is why it is critical the Bill pass as soon as possible. Community workers should not have to wait any longer for this entitlement that their colleagues across the country already have access to.
 
There is widespread support for this in my workplace and community. The Department of Customer Service consultations on the Bill showed that 96% of workers support the scheme as do 74% of employers in the community and disability sectors.
 
I hope we can count on your support to get this Bill passed.
